Makeup of Termite Colonies

 

Termite colonies are made up of workers, soldiers, and reproductive termites. These have completely different appearance, and they each perform different functions in the colony.

 

The workers are just that. These termites will build the nest and create tunnels and cavities within it for all the colony to live and move around. Workers seek out food and feed and groom the other types of termites in the colony including the queen and all the eggs she lays. They also feed and care for the larvae.

 

Soldiers look very different from workers. They develop large heads with mandibles, which are pincers that are used to fight and ward off enemies, such as certain ants. As mentioned, these termites are fed by the workers because the mandibles make it such that they cannot feed themselves.

 

The reproductive termites in the colony again look totally different than the others. They are black in color, have wings and resemble flying ants, although there are distinctions, like straight antennae and a thick mid section. Flying ants have antennae that bend and a thin mid section. These reproductive termites will swarm at certain times of the year. They will fly out of the nest together to a different location. They will mate and then their wings will fall off. From there they will begin to found a new colony.

 

The queen has a very large stomach area that can grow to about four inches in length and which allows her to lays many thousands of eggs, and one to two thousand per day is not unusual. Essentially she is feeding the colony with new termites. Colonies can last many years because queens can live up to fifty years under the right weather conditions, although fifteen to twenty years is more likely. Workers and soldiers only live a year or two. Workers and soldiers are sexually immature and cannot mate. So the job of the queen and king is to mate and keep supplying new termites for the colony.
